Weta & Hobbit 3

Hello, just a quick update, I recently relocated to New Zealand and I'm now working at Weta Digital in Wellington.

For the past month I've been working with the talented guys and girls here to finish off the animation for the last Hobbit film (The Battle of the Five Armies) which is due for release in December. If you haven't already, you can check out the trailer below.

Pacific Rim Animation Reel, Falling Cars 'n' All

With the recent release of Pacific Rim for purchase I thought I'd create an edit of all the shots I animated on the film. I've even included the simpler ones of falling cars and hovering helicopters.

I've also added a few shots for continuity (marked with a red dot), most of which don't contain animation apart from the one at 0:52 which was animated by Cedric Lo. So please note, that's his great work there.

Pacific Rim was a really enjoyable project to work on. I joined ILM thinking that, with their work being of such high quality, there would be many rounds of revisions and getting shots approved would take a long time. I was surprised to find that there was a lot of trust placed in everyone's ability and with unprecedented access to the director, Guillermo del Toro, I was able to animate more footage in 6 months than on any other live-action film I can think of.

New Pacific Rim Footage

Latest from Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim, a film I started working on almost a year ago. Very much looking forward to seeing how it turned out.

The Amazing Spider-Trailer

Hello, here's the latest trailer of The Amazing Spider-Man, the film I was working on up until a few weeks ago.

Looks pretty good I reckon and I particularry respect the brave decicion they've made not to put a series of loud 'BRAAAAHHHHHHH' horn noises throughout. I was also pretty pleased to see one of the shots I animated appear in it. It occurs at around 32 seconds and looks like this -

Behind the screen ...

Here is a shot I worked on from the film Hellboy 2 : The Golden Army. In this sequence, the character of Abe Sapien is being beaten up by the much bigger Mr Wink, but the action is partially obscured by a screen.

I thought it would be fun to show some of my playblasts that reveal what's going on behind that screen.

Playblasts of Fight I animated from Hellboy 2 from Brendan Body on Vimeo.

My initial version of this shot was much more realistic, with Wink punching Abe more and throwing him around much less. When it was reviewed by the director, Guillermo del Toro, he asked for something more extreme, wanting Abe to be thrown around like a rag doll. Specifically citing Bam Bam from The Flintstones (when he used to throw Fred around) as an example of the action he wanted.

These playblasts are not the finished animation, I animated this block of the fight, and the animation was finished off by another animator, Ina Hurst.
