JOHN CARTER

John Carter is released this week, the film I spent almost a year working on. This gives me an excuse to share this great picture of the animators from Double Negative's room 402 created by Graham Gallagher.

Our costumes relate to what we were working on at the time Dan Pozo, Chris Page, Graham and Francesco Canonico are dressed as Tharks. Craig Rutherford is wrestling with some Thark hatchlings, Stafford Lawrence dons a Thoat costume while Brecht Debaene and I are sharing a White Ape costume ... for some reason I'm the back end!

More of Graham's work can be found HERE.

There's been a surprising amount of footage released from the film and the following section shows some of the shots I animated -

Rather than trying to describe them all, I've made the following pictorial montage.

The film looks pretty good I reckon, and I hope those of you planning to see it enjoy it.

Really cool stuff Brendan. Those White Apes look awesome. I've been watching that clip over and over. You guys did a nice job making them feel huge and heavy even while still keeping them fast. I've found that to be one of the harder things to do on bigger creatures.

I'm curious if you could maybe give some tips on bigger creatures? Particularly keeping them fast and fierce while still keeping them feeling big and heavy? It is something I will be working on more in the future (video game project) and would love any tips you might have. Thanks.

Hey Barry,

Thanks for your comment, glad you like the Apes!

I did write a tutorial on the basics of adding weight to characters on here but it's definitely a tricky subject and something I'd like to go into more detail in the future.

Hey Brendan!

My friends and I from my school's Animation Club saw "John Carter" last night in IMAX 3D. Great job! We really enjoyed the movie. That fight scene between Carter and the White Apes was fantastic.
